The water
crossing became gradually deeper as more competitors went through it. When Siong Fah of Miri came to cross it, one could
only see the top of his Mitsubishi Jeep.
Siong Fah's Jeep taking a dive.
Wilfred Sim aka Aboy saw his car cease to function when his ECU 'drowned'.. only to pop his bonnet to see the entire engine submerged in water. That closed the day stage racing with 3 more cars to run. Group A continued with a night SS where competitors negotiated a series of turns, a ditch crossing to finish. The top three competitors managed to drive their cars in and up and through the ditch. This was far different from a number of competitors who had balls of steel try to speed through the ditch only to find themselves hitting the bank and getting stucked. Team HU/ TIE car's impact was such that it lost its winch and also front drive.
Climbing SS 2 was the easy part..
SS 2
continued on Day 3. Robert Chien, Jacko and Ah Shin were to run. Robert DNF but
Jacko and Ah Kion showed a 'never say die' attitude even though they incurred 30
penalty points. Ah Shin and Ah Soong were determined to catch the leading
Sabahans and displayed some of the best teamwork in an SS. SS 3's rate of
attrition was high. This stage saw 8 DNFs out of 12. Reason? The deep mud pool.
Team Kong/Leong of Sabah and Siong Fah saw serious mechanical failures that they
had to totally withdraw from competition. Wilfred Sim attempted this stage only
to find that his car also followed likewise. SS 4 was another rater muddy
affairs and saw 3 DNFs due to winch failure. SS 5 was a rather short but super
technical SS more suited to rock crawlers. Jacko stunned the crowd by climbing
up the wall. The only other person to do it was Robert Chien, a
second slower.
SS 6 was capped the event on a high note. The speed SS saw the skill and power
of the drivers and their vehicles. Top honors goes to Jacko again!
Apai Innovation enjoyed themselves all the way and came up as Bintulu's top team in 5th (Group A unlimited)
There was much hoo-ha for the awards ceremony. Senator Datuk Hii came and presented donations to various charity bodies including the Red Crescent who were the official paramedic on duty at the event. After all presentations were made, the VIPs left the area. Sumptuous FooChow food was served in large portions, little blue cans with tigers were seen popping and the party started.... next year? Yeah you bet..
