Outdoor Treks and Adventure - Treks in Nature

Kubah – Rayu, Trail of Hope

[home]

We do not know how this trail got its name but perhaps after seeing the rich bio diversity in the area, the trail makers decided to call it just that. One needs to walk about 1 km to the 350m alt and begin the trek on the ridge of a mixed dipterocarp rainforest. It is a 3.8 km mainly downhill walk to the Matang Wildlife Centre.

Large dipterocarp trees with giant size buttress on this trail

On this trail one get to see the many different species of palms, nepenthes (pitcher plants), countless species of different size trees, orchids, ferns, figs and more.

There is a chance to sight some of the local bird species along the way. On one of our trips we came across a mating ground of the Argus pheasant, which was cleaned and cleared. The call of the male Argus nearby was clear and distinctive.

Matang Wildlife Centre
is part of Kubah National Park. One of its main functions is to house endangered wildlife which often had been confiscated. Their major draws are orphaned and rescued Orang Utans. It also has an alpha male orang utan that has developed the cheek pads.

This is a full day tour. Depart Kuching in the morning and go overland to Kubah National Park. Here we’ll walk 1km to enter the trail and trek 3.8km on well maintained forest trail. On reaching Rayu, we’ll take a rest. After we’ll get to see the many wildlife that are housed here and also see an orang utan feeding time.

There are leeches on this trail and it also rains quite a bit as this is a water catchment area, so be well prepared for this. The trek is described as easy.
