WILDERNESS FIRST AID AND CPR COURSE

Level 1 & 2

 

Wilderness first aid is the specific discipline of first aid which relates to care in remote areas, where emergency medical services are far away and will take a long while to arrive. Nursing care, though not part of normal first aid, is part of wilderness first aid.

We offer 2 courses:

1. WFA & CPR Basic Level 1 & 2 and

2. Wilderness Medical First Responder, Level 3

The above 2 courses are conducted by Outward Bound Medical Panel. This is an internationally recognised certification that was developed by senior medical practitioners from main line medical to military medical personnel.

Who should attend the course?
The Wilderness First Aid course is one for outdoor adventure leaders, serious recreational adventurers, tour guides to wilderness areas, and for those who are involved in the Outdoor Recreation/Education fields.
This course will give you a solid grounding in patient assessment which makes up for many of the key topics in Wilderness First Aid. Training session comprise both theory and plenty of practical scenarios to give trainees an understanding of patient assessment and to prepare them for unexpected eventualities. CPR training would be ‘hands-on’.

The teaching methodology is one designed for the local context where participants 'learn by doing'. The bulk of the course would involve participants in action.

Learning by Doing.
With two days of practice and content, you will leave the WFA course assessed to a high level and confident in your new skills. Following that, there would be a half day of CPR training and assessment. The WFA and CPR courses are part of the development of Sarawak’s tourism towards international standards.

Upon completion and successfully passing the assessment, you will be issued with an Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Certification valid for two years, and a CPR Certification. All courses are internationally recognised and successful candidates will be certified by Outward Bound Medical Panel.

1. Details of the course

1.1 Wilderness First Aid (WFA) (2 days – 14 hours) together with

1.2 CPR Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and Conscious Adult Choking (Half day- 4 hours)

2. We are able to cater to different number of participants however Facilitator to student ratio is 1:10 per course. The course usually includes:

  • Lunch and 2 tea breaks
  • Notes and materials
  • Certificate for successful candidates

4. Who are eligible to attend this course?

  • Outdoor Guides (including national park guides)

  • Those working in outdoor environments e.g., forester, miners, etc.

  • Tour Guides

  • Outdoor group leaders (e.g., for teambuilding camps)

  • Outdoor wilderness service providers

All applications must be 18 yrs and older and must be able to comprehend the English language as this is the medium of instruction.

6. Course Outline

1. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) (2 days - 14 hours)

Fun, practical and loaded with scenarios this is the ideal introduction to the field of Wilderness Medicine for those in the outdoors. This course covers all of the essential topics using a number of scenarios for participants to become familiar with concepts.

It is required that participants pass a proficiency test at the end of this course.

The broad syllabus for a 2-day (14 training hours) WFA course as follow:

  • Primary survey
  • Deadly Bleeders
  • Fracture Management - splintless/improvised splint (lower leg)
  • Bite/Sting Management (recognising allergy reaction)
  • Chest injuries (fracture ribs/flail  chest)
  • Head Injury
  • The unconscious victim
  • Evacuation techniques

2. CPR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Conscious Adult Choking

Course content:

CPR teaches participants how to respond to life-threatening emergencies. The course focuses on primary care through a combination of knowledge development, skill development and realistic scenario practice to make sure participants have the confidence in their ability to provide care when emergency situations arise.

Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Communicable Disease Protection, including barrier use
  • Primary Assessment
  • Rescue Breathing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Conscious
  • Unconscious Obstructed Airway Management
