ROCK ON 2, Marathon Rock Climbing Festival – sports climbing competition with a festival element

When?

23 (Fri) to 25 (Sun) September, 2011 (3 Days and 2 Nights event)

Where? Fairy Cave Climbing area - Batman Wall, Stage Wall, Nepenthes Wall, Zoo Wall and Fairy Cave Wall - all in Bau District, 45 km from Kuching, Sarawak, East Malaysia

Rock climbers form around the region – Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak - those from elsewhere are also most welcome
All climbing levels welcome

Why?

To promote a fun, short weekend climbing destination and festival

How?

A fun event, not a hard strict climbing competition

What else?

All climbers are to bring and climb with their own gears; rope, quick draws, belay devices, cow’s tail, etc.

2. Fairy Cave Climbing Area

Sarawak has a fantastic natural climbing wall at the Fairy Caves, Bau. In 1999, together with a group of Australians came to bolt and put up sport climbing routes here. It has some of the hardest and technical routes found in SE Asia.

There are several walls here: Batman wall (main climbing area), the Roof (where some of the hardest roof climbs are found), and the Stage (Baby) wall. The Nepenthes and multi-pitch wall are found at the Fairy Cave. The Zoo wall is on the same mountain on a different side about 3km away.

3. Why should you come to Rock On 2?

  • To climb interesting natural sports routes in an all weather climbing area.

  • Motivate yourself to get back to climbing harder grades or notching up your climbing grades outdoors

  • Learn from more advanced climbers

  • Get to hang out with other climbers in a fun and yet challenging event

4. Entry fee

  • Outstation climbers: RM 75 per person

  • Local Kuching based climbers: RM 35 per person

  • Fee includes: Score card, Event T-shirt and Entry to festival party (live band)

5. Travel information

By Air

  • From Singapore: AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, and Tiger Airways

  • From destinations from within Malaysia: Firefly, AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, MasWings

  • From Brunei: Royal Brunei Airlines, via Miri by: Malaysia Airlines, MasWings, AirAsia

 6. Transportation

  • Kuching Airport to Climbing area (and return) 40km one way

  • Chartered vans (max 10 persons) at RM 100 per van (booked through organizer). Price will vary according to number of passengers in a van. It is easier if you organize yourselves and arrive and depart in groups.

7. Accommodation

  1. Homestay (clean, with local hosts) at Peros Village (5km from climbing wall) at RM 55 per night with breakfast, RM 110 for duration of festival on shared room basis. (Transportation available to go to climbing area RM 5 per way per person).

  2. Camping (in your own tents) at climbing area (public wash and bath facilities) RM 10 per night, RM 20 per person for duration of the event.

8. Food and Beverage
The local villagers will set up food and drink stalls at the climbing festival venue. Expect to pay RM 5 – 6 for a meal. Pop and hot drinks, and other beverages are available.

Transfer to Kuching International Airport for flight home

10. Event format

This is an open ‘marathon’ style event where each climber scores his/her own climbs. Prizes will be awarded to those who excel in the following areas:

  • Successfully climb routes by On-sight, Flash, Red-point, Hang-dog, and Toprope.

  • Climbs their own most difficult route

  • Climbs the most routes

  • And other achievements as the organizers sees fit

A score card will be given to each climber and they are to fill in the card as they climb and send it in to the organizer for scoring to gain points for prizes.

13. Cost and Packages:

  1. Entry fee- Outstation climbers RM 75 per person includes T-shirt, score card and entry to festival party.

  2. Entry fee- Local Kuching based climbers RM 35 per person includes T-shirt, score card and entry to festival party.

  3. Camping:  RM 20 for the duration of the festival (3D/2N)

  4. Homestay at Peros Village: RM 110 per person includes daily breakfast for duration of the festival (3D/2N) on shared room basis.

  5. Kuching Airport to Fairy Cave/Peros Van transfer RM 100 per van (maximum 10 persons) per way. Return cost is also RM 100 per van per way.
