ROCK ON 2
Marathon Sports Climbing Festival
23-25 September, 2011

Event Rules

1.      All climbers (and none-climbing participants such as Belayers) are to climb/belay according to established sport climbing protocol and safety standards. It is required that all climbers and belayers have a minimum Level 1 certification.

2.      All climbers are to bring their own climbing gears and they are to be in good healthy working order without any signs of fatigue.

3.      Keep the climbing area and routes clean and leave the route boundaries untouched.

4.      This is a sports festival to be held in an open friendly manner. All participants are to conduct themselves in a friendly, sportsman like behaviour at all times (to the locals alike).

5.      All participants are guests to the Bidayuh native tribe who are custodians of the climbing area through ancestral rights.

6.      Scorers and official observers are entitled to reprimand contestants, members of the event technical committee are entitled to warn and disqualify contestants for intentional damaging of routes, disobeying safety regulations, breaching the Climbing festival rules.

7.      This is an open self scoring friendly event. It is a festival where climbers challenge themselves more than others.

8.      The organizer has the right to score climbers in a manner they see fit. A handicap system would be in place. This is based on the ability of the climber vs. the climbs that they successfully climbed. For example, if Kim normally climbs 6A, and was successful in Red Pointing a 6B, Kim would get more points than climbing a 6A climb.

9.      The scorer of the event has the right to deduct/add points to the climber’s score sheet in this handicap system.

10.  While the organizer attempts to make this a fun event, they can entertain any protest. The event technical committee will deliberate on the protest and any decision they make is final.

11.  Helmets are not mandatory but each climber is encouraged to wear one.

12.  Climbing order - Climbers attempting to climb a route are to climb on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis.

13.  Climbers are to queue for their climbs if there is more than 1 climber on a route.

14.  On Sight – To successfully and cleanly climb a route on the first attempt without ever seeing the route climbed or without receiving any tips. This is hard to achieve as there is no isolation at this event. This will be a self challenge with climber being honest with him/her self.

15.  Flash – is when a climber successfully climbs cleanly and complete a route on the first attempt after having received information and tips from others.

16.  Red point – this is achieved when a climber successfully leads by clipping in quick draws for his/her ascend up a route. A ‘pink’ point is achieved if a climber successfully lead climbs with quick draws already clipped in by other climbers.

17.  Hang dog- is achieved when a climber leads climb and completes a route while taking rest and hanging on quickdraw. Those hanging (hang dogging) are given a maximum of 15 seconds to hang after which they are to attempt to ascend the climb. A climber is deemed not able to complete a climb if he/she hangs longer than 15 seconds and should be lowered for others to climb.

18.  Toprope- Upon starting a route climbers are required to hold a starting point for 2 seconds. A 2 second hold of a finishing point allows one to consider the route completed. Climbers are to climb with a 'slacken' rope. Climbers would be considered sitting on the rope if the rope is tight. Should a climber hangs/sits on the rope, he/she would be considered NOT to have successfully toprope the climb. Climbers can rest/sit on a rope for 15 seconds, after which they must attempt to ascend or be lowered from the climb (and not to have been considered to toprope the climb).

19.  The organiser will not be responsible for putting up ropes for toprope climbers.

20.  Winners within the climbing groups will be based on the most points gathered. Prizes will be awarded in kind.

21.  The event technical committee made up to 3 persons from Outdoor Treks and Climb Asia will have the final say on ruling made with regards to rules pertaining to this Rock On 2 event.
